Staunton is dominated by 18th and 19 century architecture which was untouched by the war. The illustration features the Marquis Building based in the Beverley District, Beverley Street which is considered to be one of America’s most celebrated Main Streets. The Marquis Building was designed by T.J. Collins in 1895. It is also known as the umbrella building, due to it’s umbrella-like turret in front. It was a trade sign of a clothing store. The architect has also designed and remodeled more than 200 buildings in downtown Staunton.
